"Born to the Night" (also stylized as "Born To The Night"[1]) is a song by American singer Ava Max. It was released on September 18, 2020, through Atlantic Records as the seventh track of her debut studio album Heaven & Hell.
Critical Acclaim[]
Joe Wright of the Daily Nebraskan writes that the song "feels like a blast to the past of early 2010s pop hits. Max channels her inner Lady Gaga to create a mega-scale, dazzling jam. It’s one of the best blends of electronic and dance-pop, especially with the bass-heavy thumping drum beat that drives the song."

Lyrics[]
[Chorus]
I've been waiting until midnight
Slowly dying since the sunrise
'Cause I, I was born, I was born to the night
In the night, in the night, I survive
All the poison, the pleasure, the highs
I was born, I was born to be
[Verse 1]
So insane
I tell my heart to sleep all day
'Cause I don't wanna deal with anything, I need a break
Dusk 'til dawn, in the city where the wild things are
When the wolves are 'round, no doubt, they're cryin' out my name
[Pre-Chorus]
Screamin' "Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh"
I'm in a moo-oo-oo, oo-oo-ood
My leather boo-oo-oo, oo-oo-oots
Are comin' out, comin' out
[Chorus]
I've been waiting until midnight
Slowly dying since the sunrise
'Cause I, I was born, I was born to the night
In the night, in the night, I survive
All the poison, the pleasure, the highs
I was born, I was born to just
[Verse 2]
Face my fears
Makin' friends with all my demons here
Now all my insecurities, they leave the atmosphere
[Pre-Chorus]
Screamin' "Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh"
I'm in a moo-oo-oo, oo-oo-ood
My leather boo-oo-oo, oo-oo-oots
Are comin' out, comin' out
[Chorus]
I've been waiting until midnight
Slowly dying since the sunrise
'Cause I, I was born, I was born to the night
In the night, in the night, I survive
All the poison, the pleasure, the highs
I was born, I was born to the night
[Bridge]
The night is my mother
The sky is my brother
And I'm the daughter of star-crossed lovers
The night is my mother
The sky is my brother
And I'm the daughter of star-crossed lovers
[Chorus]
'Cause I ('Cause I), I was born, I was born, to the night
In the night, in the night, I survive (In the night, I survive)
All the poison, the pleasure, the highs
I was born, I was born, to the night
Trivia[]
- The melody for the lyrics "I've been waiting until midnight / Slowly dying since the sunrise" samples “Major Tom (Coming Home)” by Peter Schilling.
- The line "In the city where the wild things are" is a reference to Wild Thing, an outtake of Heaven & Hell.
- The only differences from the writer's demo and final version are the instrumental and some verse melodies.
