" | With one of the toughest and most rewarding years by far of my life behind me (which I will talk more about in album three...) I definitely feel the need to really express my gratitude and love for all of you. Sticking by me through thick n thin. I was going through a lot of personal heartbreak over the last two years and to be completely honest it almost took me out. I see Diamonds & Dancefloors as one of those albums I did because of my love for pop music. I wasn’t thinking about number 1’s at radio or anything number related. It was specifically tailored for you, the fans and it was how I felt in the moment. I truly feel like the past is now behind me and I can’t wait to start all over again with you, and into this next chapter. … to be continued… ఌ | " |
– Max closing off the era[1] |
Diamonds & Dancefloors is the sophomore studio album by American singer Ava Max. It was released on January 27, 2023, through Atlantic Records.
Background[]
In an interview, Max said that she is on a five-year album plan, wanting to release a new album every year. On December 5, 2020, Max posted a tweet saying "2021. That’s it." which could have hinted to a deluxe edition of her debut studio album, Heaven & Hell, the release of her sophomore studio album, or both.[2]
In an interview, Max stated the Heaven & Hell era was done and that she had another body of work, which was a "new phase".
On February 12, 2022, she cut off her "Max Cut" and dyed her hair red. She posted a video with the caption “(D)(D)”, from which rumors sparked her next album will be named Diamonds & Dancefloors.
On March 2, 2022, she confirmed "Maybe You're the Problem" will be the lead single. She also stated this album is her most personal album to date. "Maybe You're the Problem" was officially released as the lead single from the album on April 28th, 2022.
On June 1, 2022, she revealed the album name, Diamonds & Dancefloors, and the cover art, first on social media, then on the Today Show. [3]
On September 1, 2022, she released the album's second single, "Million Dollar Baby". The same day, it was announced the album had been postponed from its original release date October 14, 2022, to the later date of January 27, 2023. On the same day, seven tracks on the album leaked in retaliation to the delay.
In an interview, Max said she considers "Million Dollar Baby" the lead single of Diamonds & Dancefloors because she was with her ex during the release of "Maybe You're the Problem". She also stated she dyed her hair brown right after she broke up with her ex.
On September 15, 2022, reports surfaced of several customers receiving the vinyl version of the album early via Amazon France. Atlantic Records contacted these customers urging them to mail back the item in return for the four color vinyl variants when the album officially releases as a gift.
On October 13, 2022, the day before the original release date, Max posted the official track list of the standard edition. On the same day, the full album was leaked in medium quality as it was ripped from the early-shipped vinyls. On October 18, 2022, she addressed the leaks on TikTok by saying that she is "broken-hearted" by the situation, and that she and her team are trying to take them down. A deluxe version featuring six outtakes from the album (with a total of twenty songs) was confirmed during an interview held on October 13, 2022.[4]
On November 10, 2022, she released "Weapons", the first promotional single off the album. Later in the month, she embarked on the iHeart Radio Jingle Ball Tour.
On December 16, 2022, "Dancing's Done" was added to Apple Music's "New Music Daily Japan" & "Today's Top Hits Spain" playlists, despite not being released or playable. On December 19, 2022, Max revealed an updated artwork for the album through her social media. [5] The following day, "Dancing's Done" was released digitally on all streaming platforms.
On January 10, 2023, she teased the release of her next promotional single, One of Us on her social media platforms. [6] The song was released two days later.
On January 24, 2023, the album's fourth promotional single, Cold As Ice, was officially released.
On January 27, 2023, the album officially released worldwide, along with its third single, Ghost. Ava held an interview with ET Canada where gave information from the album. She talked about the album cover, stating, "It's from the Diamonds & Dancefloors visualizer for Dancing's Done, and so when I finished this visualizer, I was like- okay, I've been sitting on the other album cover for way too long. It's time to swap it, and I swapped it to this, and it really looked like the cover, to me. Even though I love the other cover as well, now we have multiple covers!".
On February 22, 2023, Max officially announced the European leg of her her first tour, On Tour (Finally). Throughout the following months, multiple festival dates were announced. On April 3, 2023, Max announced the United States leg of the tour. The tour is set to start on April 14, 2023 in Manchester, UK.
Album Rework[]
The album was allegedly originally titled "Woman's World" and scheduled for a 2021/2022 release.[7] It was recorded during the first half of 2021. Max had also changed her Instagram bio and posted that "It's a woman's world" after the release of "My Head & My Heart".[8] Max stated that the album was "anthemic", "strong", and contained "a lot of female empowerment [and] what [she] went through during the pandemic".[9] This speculated version of the album was shelved due to two breakups throughout the album's making.[10] Below are possible tracks on the original album.
- "Dancing Feet Don't Cry" (confirmed)
- "Emotions"
- "Everytime I Cry"
- "Woman's World"
Promotion[]
As part of the promotion for her second studio album, Max announced the 12 Days of Diamonds & Dancefloors campaign, a series of short video visualizers for the twelve remaining album tracks to be released, after releasing the second promotional single of the record, "Dancing's Done". This event started on December 21, 2022, and ended on New Year's Day of 2023.

The songs listed below are the possible tracks on the deluxe.
Trivia[]
- The following tracks on the album contain samples of other artist's songs.
- "Million Dollar Baby" interpolates "Can't Fight the Moonlight" by LeAnn Rimes.
- "Diamonds & Dancefloors" interpolates "All My Life" by K-Ci & JoJo.
- "Get Outta My Heart" interpolates "Twisted Nerve" by Bernard Herrmann.
- In an interview with Apple Music's Travis Mills, Max revealed she wanted the album to have 18 tracks.
- This was eventually shortened to 16 (possibly including "Power"), then to the final 14.
- According to a reliable insider, a concept title for the album was Woman's World.[17] This was before the 2021 breakup that shaped the album.
- The songwriting credits were leaked in September 2022 via Apple Music as they were made available upon submitting the album to the platform.
- A rock song was scrapped from the album. Max stated it "didn't really fit that album. I was feeling different and I made a really crazy rock song. I was really angry that day, like I was screaming into the microphone. I just need to put it out."[citation needed]
- As of late December 2022, "Ghost", "Sleepwalker" and "Hold Up (Wait a Minute)" were Ava's top three tracks on the album.
- In an interview with the radio station FM104, Max stated that the album took two years to finish. [18]
- In an interview with Zane Lowe, Max stated that she and Cirkut recorded about 70 songs for the album.
- There are around 30 songs that never got recorded, bringing the total up to almost 100.
- Ava stated that she reworked the whole album because of a breakup in June 2022, which may have been a cause of the delay.[19]
- The official photoshoot was taken at Paris Las Vegas, a French-themed hotel and casino located on the Las Vegas strip, the Little White Wedding Chapel, the Peppermill Restaurant and other various spots in Las Vegas.
- The first song written for the final version of the album was "Diamonds & Dancefloors" during the COVID-19 lockdowns.
- "Dancing's Done" was almost scrapped from the final version, which was why it was listed as the final track on the album.
- Diamonds & Dancefloors debuted at number eight on Billboard's Top Album Sales chart with 7,000 copies sold in the U.S. within the first week of it's release.[20] This marks Max's first top ten on the chart, with Heaven & Hell debuting at number twelve.
- The album also debuted at number 34 on the Billboard 200 chart.
- The album also reached number 24 on Billboard's 2023 Top Dance/Electronic Albums Year-End chart.
- "Maybe You're The Problem", "Million Dollar Baby", and "Ghost" reached numbers 64, 66, and 68 respectively on Billboard's 2023 Hot Dance/Electronic Songs Year-End chart.
- The first song recorded for the record was the title track.
- The concept of the album was solidified by "Million Dollar Baby". "Sleepwalker" and "Ghost" were written respectively afterwards.
- The visualizers made for the album were filmed a month before it's release right as Max was switching management, causing production to be rushed. Ultimately, Ava decided not to put the full versions of each video out but opted for clips to use on TikTok as she still wanted to share them in some form[21]. On a Spotify Live, she also mentioned that the visualizer didn’t fit her artistic vision, causing her more reason to not release them.
