Ava Max Wiki

Heaven & Hell is the debut studio album by American singer Ava Max. It was released on September 18, 2020, through Atlantic Records.[1]

Background

In April 2019, Max said in a Billboard interview that, "there are some other tracks on there that are like wild cards, and there are a few that I'm being vulnerable in".[2]

In an interview with Nylon, Max revealed that the album had been finished but decided to improve the track list by adding more songs to the album while only removing one. She also stated that the album was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[3]

Max announced the title of her debut album Heaven & Hell on July 29, 2020. The announcement was accompanied by the release of the single "Who's Laughing Now".[4]

On September 1, 2020, Max posted a link to pre-save the album on her social medias, saying that if enough people pre-saved the album the album's track list would be revealed.[5] Two days later on September 3, just a few hours before the release of the single "OMG What's Happening", the official Heaven & Hell track list was revealed on her website.[6]

In an interview with Amazon Music, Max confirmed that a deluxe edition of the album will be released.[7]

In an interview with MTV, published on October 12, 2020, Max stated "I'm also excited because I'm finishing the deluxe [edition of Heaven & Hell], and I'm really, really excited for everyone to hear these records as well. It's just a lot of music. I promise you guys there will be no shortage of music",[8] though many insiders have reported its cancellation. "My Head & My Heart" was released as a single from a digital edition of the album on November 19, 2020.[9]

In an interview, Ava confirmed that the Heaven & Hell era was officially over and she would be releasing music for her new album soon after.

Scrapped Tracks

Deluxe

Shortly after the album's release, Max confirmed numerous times that its deluxe version was also in the works and nearly finished [18][19][20]. However, the idea was shelved to introduce her sophomore album, Diamonds & Dancefloors[21].
There was speculation that the deluxe was actually another EP for the era. It was scrapped to prioritize the release of Diamonds & Dancefloors.

The tracks below are speculated tracks on the album's re-issue.

Trivia

  • In a now-deleted article, Pure Charts revealed that Ava Max's debut album was going to be called The Exhibitionist and was scheduled to be released in 2019. However, she later scrapped this concept of the album. [22][23]
  • When asked about the amount of songs made for the album by FLAUNT magazine, Max said "We’ve been writing over 100 songs and now finally, I wanted to put out the project. It's all about that energy, I’m all about energy." [24]
  • The following tracks contain samples of other artist's songs.
    • "My Head & My Heart" interpolates "Around the World (La La La La La)" by ATC.
    • "Kings & Queens" interpolates "If You Were A Woman (And I Was A Man)" by Bonnie Tyler.
    • "Born to the Night" interpolates "Major Tom (Coming Home)" by Peter Schilling.
    • "Torn" unofficially samples "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" by ABBA.
  • "My Way" was set to be the lead single on of the album, but was removed entirely. [25]
  • "Freaking Me Out" was set to be featured on the album after it's release, but was ultimately scrapped. [26]
  • "Wild Thing" was originally going to be the 12th track of the album when the track list first leaked on Max's website, but it was eventually replaced with "Rumors".[27]
  • Max revealed in an interview with New Music Daily that she went back and forth between Heaven & Hell and Heaven or Hell.
  • The album was originally set for a late 2019 release until Max confirmed that her label had pushed it back to 2020.[28]
  • The original album cover was going to be the picture of her with silver body paint.[29]
  • The picture used for the album cover was the very last picture taken from the Heaven & Hell photoshoot.[29]
  • In the "Sweet but Psycho" cover, the reflection of Ava's hair in the mirror is orange. This indicates that she likely had a loose concept of her debut album around this time.
  • Heaven and Hell was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on October 26, 2020, for sales of 500,000 certified units in the US.
  • Max's favorite memory from recording the project was whilst she was writing "Torn" in her hometown Virginia.
  • Max came up with the album title while on the way to the MTV VMAs.[30]
  • "H.E.A.V.E.N" was the last song recorded for the album.
  • After taking a break from writing in June and July 2020, Max was able to "truly reflect" on what she wanted for the album. [31]
  • Heaven & Hell peaked at number one on the Worldwide iTunes Album Chart, with it's lead single (Sweet but Psycho) peaking at number ten on the Billboard Hot 100.
  • None of the tracks on the album's scrapped deluxe edition were written by Max herself. Had it been released, those tracks would be the only ones on the album to not be written by Max.
