It interpolates LeAnn Rimes ['Can't Fight the Moonlight'], only on 'in the dark'. It's only those three lyrics, that little melody. I called up LeAnn. And you know what? I love her. This song brought me to LeAnn Rimes. So I'm happy. I love her. I loved Coyote Ugly growing up.

"Million Dollar Baby" (originally titled "Miracle" [1]) is a song by American singer Ava Max. It was released on September 1st, 2022 as the second single from her second studio album Diamonds & Dancefloors. Despite having a music video, a visualizer was filmed for the song without being released.

Background[]

The song's release was teased by many reliable insiders on the ATRL forum. Max had hinted towards the song herself, liking a fan's tweet captioned with the title. It was revealed as the opening track to Diamonds & Dancefloors due to Apple Music leaking track-by-track credits for the album and citing “Can’t Fight the Moonlight” writer Diane Warren on the first track.

On August 2, 2022, Max posted a snippet of the song on TikTok, as well as some of the lyrics of the song on X and Instagram. It was also registered on ASCAP the same day.

On August 26, 2022, Ava shared the release date as well as the cover for the single.

In an interview, Ava said that she considers "Million Dollar Baby" the lead single of Diamonds & Dancefloors because she was with her ex during the release of "Maybe You're the Problem". [2]

The song was originally planned to be titled "Miracle" but it was changed because Max would rather be referred to as a Million Dollar Baby. It was planned to be the lead single of the album. [3]

Promotion[]

Ava Max teased the song multiple times on TikTok. An extended snippet was created on August 23, 2022. She also did a TikTok with LeAnn Rimes in partnership with Spotify.

On August 28, 2022, the song was promoted during the MTV VMAs through commercials in partnership with Extra Gum. [4]

Music Video[]

The music video was filmed on August 11, 2022 and released alongside the song on September 1, 2022. It was directed by Andrew Donoho and choreographed by Charm La'Donna. The music shows Max going into a nightclub titled Diamonds & Dancefloors, and seeing and admiring a version of herself in blonde hair, proceeding to follow her around the backstages of the club. They then merge into one single brunette entity in which they both disappear after.

Song Meaning[]

At it's core, the song is about coming out stronger on the other end of a breakup or any difficult hardship in life. It's also about knowing your worth, that you are everything and you should take care of yourself and turn your pain into power while also turning your emotional distress into something beautiful. [7]

Lyrics[]

[Intro]
(She's a miracle)
(She’s a miracle, oh, oh, oh, ooh)

[Verse 1]
Diamonds
She turns tears to diamonds, woah
Trying to find that silver lining, woah
And once in a while

[Pre-Chorus]
I'll go walkin' in the twilight
Counting down to midnight
Close my eyes and wait for her to shine
I’m hiding in the shadows
Praying that she'll break free

[Chorus]
In the dark of the night
She got danger on her mind
She's a million dollar baby
Nobody can explain it
She's a miracle
She's a miracle, oh, oh, oh, ooh
She broke out of her chains
Turned the fire into rain
She's a million dollar baby
She's bound to drive you crazy
She's a miracle
She’s a miracle, oh, oh, oh, ooh

[Verse 2]
Hеart broke, oh-oh
You can’t keep her down though, oh-oh (Ah, ah, ah)
Ice cold, oh-oh
She's coming back to lifе though, woah

[Pre-Chorus]
And one in a while
I'll go walkin’ in the twilight
Counting down to midnight
Close my eyes and wait for her to shine
I'm hiding in the shadows
Praying that she'll break free

[Chorus]
In the dark of the night
She got danger on her mind
She's a million dollar baby
Nobody can explain it
She’s a miracle
She's a miracle, oh, oh, oh, ooh
She broke out of her chains
Turned the fire into rain
She's a million dollar baby
She's bound to drive you crazy
She's a miracle
She's a miracle, oh, oh, oh, ooh

[Post-Chorus]
Ma, ma, ma, ma, ma
Ma, ma, ma, ma, ma, miracle
Ma, ma, ma, ma, ma
Ma, ma, ma, ma, ma, miracle
Ma, ma, ma, ma, ma
Ma, ma, ma, ma, ma
She's a miracle, oh, oh, oh (Oh)
