"Salt" (originally titled "Poison") is a song by American singer Ava Max. It was released on December 12, 2019, through Atlantic Records as the fourth single from her debut studio album Heaven & Hell.[1]
On April 8, 2020, Max released an acoustic version of the song to all streaming platforms while quarantined from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Background[]
Max originally posted the song to her SoundCloud account on July 27, 2018. She then posted the audio to her YouTube channel three days later and took to Instagram to say that "Salt is one of [her] favorite songs" and that "it’ll just be up on [her] YouTube Channel and [her] SoundCloud" because she could not wait any longer to release it.[2]
On December 5, 2019, over a year later, Max announced via social media that "Salt" would be officially released on all platforms a week later on December 12, 2019.[3]

Critical reception[]
Mark Nied of Idolator praised the song, calling it "the ultimate kiss-off to an ex" and claiming that it could "easily net her another “Sweet but Psycho”-sized hit."[4] Rania Aniftos of Billboard described the song as an "upbeat, sassy track about having fun after a sad spell",[5] while Madeline Roth of MTV News felt that it was "dance-pop blissfulness".[6]
