"So Am I" is a song by American singer Ava Max. It was released on March 7, 2019, through Atlantic Records as the second single from her debut studio album Heaven & Hell.

A remix of the song featuring South Korean boy band NCT 127 was later released on July 3, 2019.[1]

Background[]

In an interview with Billboard writer Michael Silver, Max stated that the song is about "what makes people unique and different from each other. It’s about loving yourself, being different, being an outcast and not fitting in the format that society wants to put us in — just celebrating what really makes you different. Whenever I’m feeling down, I remind myself that my flaws make me perfect, because in reality there is no perfect."[2]

Promotion[]

Max teased the song on Twitter for several weeks,[3] calling on fans to share pictures of themselves to "show the world what makes you different" using the hashtag #SoAmI.[4]

Critical reception[]

Billboard called the song a "bouncy, pop-heavy anthem" with lyrics about "navigating your adolescent years".[5] Markos Papadatos of Digital Journal described her vocals on the song as "crisp, soothing and expressive", as well as praising the song's production which has "infectious hooks and a catchy beat to it that will inspire listeners to get up and dance along." He concluded by comparing the song's "message of hope and optimism" to her previous single "Sweet but Psycho".[6]

With the NCT 127 Remix, Madeline Roth of MTV News praised the guest appearance of NCT 127, stating that "they lend more empowering, feel-good vibes with a fresh verse about appreciating someone who owns their originality."[7]

The music video, directed by Isaac Rentz, was also released on March 7.[5] It features Max walking through a high school hallway, as well as dancing in a cafeteria and a school detention room.

  • Ava had an interview with Genius, in which she explained the meaning of the lyrics.[19]
  • Palisades High School, the school that the song's music video was filmed in, burned down in early 2025 due to the Los Angeles fires.[20]
  • Charlie Puth wrote the song with Max, but his real name is not credited in most cases going under the alias Martin Sue. However, the original registration for the NCT remix of "So Am I" registered on October 10, 2020, still leaves the musician credited.[21]
