"Tabú" is a song by Spanish singer Pablo Alborán and American singer Ava Max. It was released on November 6, 2019 through Warner Music Spain.[1]

The video was released the same day and was directed by Santiago Salviche.[2]

Background and promotion[]

On October 25, 2019, Alborán started posting cryptic illustrations of a group called El Clan to his Instagram.[3] According to the captions, all of the figures are connected to flashbacks Alborán's character once experienced and were collectively aimed at a project called "Tabú" which would be out on November 6.[4] Three days later, Alborán posted the image of a partially masked Ava Max which hinted at a possible collaboration. Both artists then announced their song "Tabú" a day after that.[5][6] The singers also performed the song live for the first time a few days before its release.[7]

Song Meaning[]

Set against a backdrop of yearning and desperation, 'Tabú' delves into the intricate dance of love and loss. The lyrics paint a picture of two souls intertwined in a forbidden love, grappling with the pain of separation and the longing to turn back time. The title itself, 'Tabú', hints at the societal or personal barriers that stand in the way of true love.

The emotional journey of the song's lyrics takes the listener on a rollercoaster of feelings, from the depths of despair to the heights of passion. The artists' poignant delivery conveys the ache of unfulfilled longing and the torment of a love that feels out of reach. Each note is infused with raw emotion, drawing the listener into the heart-wrenching narrative of lost love.

Pablo Alborán and Ava Max's collaboration in 'Tabú' showcases their ability to evoke a profound emotional response from the audience. The haunting melody and poignant lyrics resonate with listeners, striking a chord of familiarity and empathy. The song's impact lies in its ability to capture the universal experience of heartache and longing, making it a poignant anthem for those who have loved and lost.

In conclusion, 'Tabú' stands as a powerful testament to the enduring pain and beauty of love. Through their heartfelt delivery and poignant lyrics, Pablo Alborán and Ava Max have crafted a song that speaks to the depths of the human soul, exploring the complexities of love, loss, and the unbreakable bond that ties two hearts together.

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1: Pablo Alborán & Ava Max]
¿De qué está hecho tu corazón?
Dime que no está vacío
Que yo tengo el mío lleno de ilusiones contigo
Tick tock, we took it too far
Don't wanna say goodbye
Stop killing our fire (our fire)
Time is running out
How could you do this to us? We were flyin'

[Pre-Chorus 1: Pablo Alborán]
Si no puedo borrar las estrellas
No me pidas que olvide tu huella

[Chorus: Ava Max & Pablo Alborán]
I die every night and everyday
Crying my way to the moon
How come there is no other way?
I don't wanna live without you
Te busco en cada amanecer
Y en el último rayo de luz
Desarmo mi cuerpo otra vez
Me invento un nuevo tabú

[Verse 2: Ava Max, Pablo & Ava, Pablo]
What can I do to take us back
Back to the very beginning
When only your eyes could see mine
Remember that?
Tic tac, suena el reloj
Llega el adiós
Socorro, no tengo bengalas
Si no queda amor
Dime qué siento entre el pecho y las alas

[Pre-Chorus 2: Ava Max]
No, I don't wanna leave it behind us
'Cause my love, I can't do this without you

[Chorus: Pablo Alborán & Ava Max]
Te busco en cada amanecer
Y en el último rayo de luz
Desarmo mi cuerpo otra vez
Me invento un nuevo tabú (Oh)
I die every night and every day (Every day)
Staring you down from the moon
Just tell me that you're on the way (Ooh)
Only you can break the taboo

Te busco en cada amanecer
Y en el último rayo de luz (Ooh)
Desarmo mi cuerpo otra vez
Me invento un nuevo tabú (Oh)
I die every night and every day
Staring you down from the moon
Just tell me that you're on the way (Yeah)
Only you can break the taboo

[Outro: Ava Max]
Oooh
Oh baby
Oooh yeah
Oooh
Oooh yeah
Only you can break the taboo

Music video[]

The music video was released on November 6, 2019 along with the song and was directed by Santiago Salviche.[2] According to Diario Sur, the video is based on classic tragedies like Blood Wedding and Romeo and Juliet but with a futuristic spin, reminiscent of Blade Runner or Mad Max.[2] Thematically, the video deals with a man falling in love just before getting married, therefore breaking a "taboo".[8]
